Using Dictation for Texts or Emails

Monday, February 8, 2021

Dictation gives you the ability to talk to your iPhone or iPad instead of typing. It’s a helpful, efficient and safe way to send a message, without occupying your hands or eyes. This is great when you need to send a message while driving, walking, or even just sitting at home!

Here’s how to make sure dictation is enabled on your iPhone or iPad.

  1. Unlock your device and tap on the ’Settings’ app.
  2. Tap on “General”.
  3. Tap on “Keyboard”.
  4. Scroll to the bottom of the keyboard menu, and there should be a setting for “Enable Dictation”. Make sure this is enabled (green).

You can access dictation anytime your keyboard is on screen, just look for the microphone button in the lower corner of your keyboard and begin speaking. Don’t forget to tap “done” when you’re ready to send.

Dictation isn’t perfect, so make sure you are speaking loud and clear in order to get the most accurate results. You will also need to speak any punctuation you want in your messages. For example, “Hi mom [exclamation point] I’ll be coming over later [period] Do you want me to pick anything up on my way to your house [question mark]”
